Kinja'd!!!

Buying ATF for a manual transmission's automatic transmission. Buying gear oil. Buying different and much more expensive gear oil in a purple bottle. Looking for a transmission filter. Not finding a transmission filter at a shop. Looking for a K&N air filter. Not buying a K&N air filter because I spent the rest of my money on the fancy gear oil. Finding spiderwebs and ants in my car from long periods of sitting. All of this and more on this evening's... C4 Update.

Kinja'd!!!

What you see pictured above are fluids for the Super T10, 3 speed auto overdrive, and rear differential. I will be replacing all of these things, but I can't until the filter from Mid America Motorworks ships. Until then, I will probably be gracing my car with a better air filter and cutting the air filter lid to improve air flow thus helping to solve the L98's breathing problems. I went to three different shops, one for the ATF and Valvoline gear lube, another for the royal purple, and another more performance-oriented shop to find the filter for the OD unit. I used to think Royal Purple was cheap when I was a child for some reason, and while I found out long ago it was quality stuff, it really carries a premium. It's the only stuff that was recommended online for the diff fluid, though, other than 70W-90 conventional (wherever the hell they sell that stuff). When I tried to explain the Doug Nash 4+3 transmission to the guy at shop #2 because he wanted to know why I was asking if they had a filter for a manual auto overdrive unit, he looked at me like a complete idiot. After I explained it again, he once again gave me a patronizing look and asked "is it a T-10 or a powerglide?" "It's both, dammit, you buffoon!" I screamed and stormed out. Just kidding, I explained it a few times more and he sorta believed me then. I'm starting to feel like the 4+3 transmission is all in my head...

(Made from some free app on the Gawker deals post and a picture.)

Anyways, I plan to change the filter and ATF for the overdrive, the gear oil on the diff and transmission, the air filter with a K&N and cut the lid (good for ~15 horsepower according to the forum conessuers). I'll also flush the radiator this weekend, maybe change cylinder head gaskets/covers soon down the road. Maybe eventually I'll add a hotter cam, better intake and runners, headers, exhaust, and even cylinder heads. That's a big maybe, considering cost and things I could buy if I had that money lying around. Anyways, those are matters for other updates. That incredibly sparse content is all for tonight's... C4 Update.

And here are a couple of classic Bavarians I spotted for wasting your time on my post...

L98 was the 5.7 (350) tune port motor right? There are a lot of easier ways to get more power out if it with out camming it. Because camming will almost require a lot more parts down the entire drivetrain.

Yes, it's a traditional 350 with a TBI fuel injection bolted on, (HEI ignition, etc) so you can do any standard 350 tricks.

The L98 has Bosch's TPI, as opposed to the primitive TBI found on L83 corvettes. It's a good system providing tons and tons of low-end torque, but runs out of breath far below the redline. To remedy that, helping the engine breathe better works wonders. However,'you can always do the typical Gen I SBC stuff since it is basically a technologically evolved engine of 30 years' production in 1985.

This is true, and I probably will put a cam farther down the list because it is much more intensive than simple bolt-on mods. The cam in this car is already mildly upgraded according to the PO, and I believe him after judging how the engine runs.

While my old Ranger didn't have a wacko Doug Nash, it was an American-made truck with a German-made Ford engine and a Japanese-made Mazda manual transmission that required ATF. I changed it with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF as well.

I hear it's a good choice. I always thought it was funny how some manual transmissions require ATF... C5/C6 Corvettes are the same way, although I know of no others.

I need UPS to arrive so I can move the wagon and then do the rear.

Any plans for an exhaust on the vette? I need to measure and guesstimate for the wagon.

I'm not sure about the exhaust right now. One one hand I shouldn't spend so much money right now, esp. on a car that isn't road legal and doesn't really do all that much for me ATM. On the other hand, I can't have my corvette sounding like a damned W123 diesel! How am I supposed to imagine driving it like that?

haha, i know it. Im in the same boat...until next week, so I hope.

im think of side exit and cutting out the resonators, but thats all. Nothing major right now, but i want to lay the groundwork for future mods. Thats my big challenge right now.

That sounds awesome. What kind of wagon is it? The L98 was choked by three catalytic converters that were even primitive for the time. A corsa exhaust would do wonders for performance and sound in addition to headers, but it's a lot of money for me to spend. If I were to do that, I'd do an Edelbrock intake and runners along with shorter gears and better cylinder heads, which would take me forever!

2005 Dodge Magnum. It's only got one set of cats, then mufflers, then resonators. It's my plan to cut the resonators, and then run the side pipes in front of the rear wheels. Problem with that is the location of the jack mount, being right where I would want the exhaust to hang, so I have to move the exhaust forward a bit, or go way smaller than I want in order to be able to change a tire in an emergency without burning myself. Complicated stupid stuff. I want to preserve the ability to go through the inspection station without throwing a code or anything else that might jeopardize my passing. I'm probably going to talk to a custom shop about the jack point, and if they can weld a different plate for it behind the wheel instead of in front, or what they suggest for that, because I really want side exit pipes...

Kinja'd!!!

Something sort of like this, but the pipe would be totally different because of the existing exhaust setup. Removing the resonators makes roughly a 7dB different in the exhaust. Since I know too much about audio production, it would go from sounding like one magnum idling, it would sound a little louder than three right next to each other. Slightly louder, without being obnoxious.

Since the 5.7L HEMI is known for having a fairly weak top end, I'm not doing much more in the way of performance, just wheels/tires/suspension and basic supporting mods at this point, because I don't want to risk the engine. Tomorrow I'm going to roll it around a parking lot and try to change the rear fluid, but I have no headlights, so I have to keep it in the lot, and hopefully not attract attention to it. Goddamn UPS...

Yes! I like these C4 burnouts! I will someday do a burnout, but until then I'll be changing fluids and filters. Fluids and filters. C4 Update needs more pictures of doing the stuff, but you have motivated me to turn it into a major monthly publication.

That would be an awesome looking setup! The sound would be fantastic for a Magnum, too. It's an interesting car.

thanks! I just need to sort out the jack point, and then i can sort out the exhaust.

Yeah, that seems like a real annoyance. It's probably nice to drive with the hemi and MB transmission, but it'll be fun with upgraded rubber and suspension.

the vette must be pretty fun though with similar upgrades.

i will say, new trans fluid gave the car a totally different personality. You dont even feel it slide into drive anymore. Id rather a 6spd row my own, but this is nice for the time being.
